Lime (four star) and sea salt (one star) versionsThe Acapulco Lime version has just the right amount of salt but the lime is almost as understated as the salt is overstated in the inedible Himalayan Pink Sea Salt version that I first tried. More lime would really give them a flavor boost.Strangely enough, salt is not even listed as an ingredient for the lime flavor despite the bag of 1.5 oz. containing about 200 mg of sodium per the nutrition facts, plus they supposedly have 3 g of saturated fat per ounce rather than the 8 g in the sea salt version, reinforcing my initial opinion that the labels are very inaccurate. Also seems very strange to call them Acapulco Lime instead of Caipirinha Lime or similar since Acapulco is associated with Mexico rather than Brazil, just as it seems odd to use Himalayan rather than Brazilian sea salt in the salt version. The chips are still not a good value but I would buy the lime version at a reasonable price because I like the flavor, texture, and freshness if not the saturated fat. The 1.5 oz. bags have 210 calories and are helpful with portion control. The expiration date on the bags I received is about six months from receipt.PREVIOUS ONE-STAR REVIEW for HIMALAYAN PINK SEA SALT VERSION:Much too salty to eat and a terrible valueThere s a lot to like about these plantain chips but some aspects that aren t so appealing. The chips are thick and rippled and have a satisfying crunch. The are consistent in size and only a few in the package were broken. They taste fresh and have a distinctive plantain flavor. The ingredient list is short and simple, although it makes no sense to use Himalayan salt shipped in from the other side of the planet when Brazil produces its own perfectly fine sea salt. The chips are fried in coconut oil, which is very high in saturated fat even compared to butter and lard. Each small 1 oz. serving has 8 g of saturated fat or 40g for the entire package. However, the biggest issue with this particular variety, Himalayan Pink Sea Salt, is that the chips are so salty as to be inedible. The salt burns the tongue and ruins the flavor. Clearly there is much more than the stated 75 mg of sodium or 375 mg in the entire package, so the nutrition information must be grossly inaccurate. The nitrogen-filled bag holds 5 oz. or 140 g and is several times larger than the volume of the contents. That s usual with chips but it is particularly noticeable with these.I would try one of the other varieties if they weren t such a poor value at the current price of $1 per 1 oz. serving even when multiple packages are purchased. 3A snack for plantain chip lovers that's relatively low in sodiumHere's my most important piece of advice regarding this 12-pack of plantain chips: Buy these only if you are sure that you are a fan of plantain chips. If you're merely intrigued by the concept, or simply caught up in the Himalayan pink salt craze, I'd recommend trying to find them locally and sample them first before buying in bulk. The reason I say this is that three of my four family members did not care for the taste of these chips at all. The fourth, a vegetarian, liked them a lot and will happily take custody of the rest of the case. Taste preferences are, of course, highly individualistic, and while some food items are well enough known that you can take the chance of buying over the internet, plantain chips are different enough from their better-known potato chip cousins that you should know what you're getting into.Nutritionally, these plantain chips are not as healthy as you might expect from a name that includes the words "organic" and "banana." Each one-ounce serving contains 150 calories (about the same as you'd get with potato chips). Worse, because they are cooked in coconut oil, each serving contains 8 grams of saturated fats (40% of your daily requirement). On the plus side, the Himalayan salt plantain chips only have 75 milligrams of sodium (3% of your daily requirement, about half of what you'd find with traditional potato chips), so they do a good job of satisfying any cravings for salty food.Because the plantain chips are thicker and denser than potato chips, it takes a little longer to eat them and you're also less likely to gobble them down mindlessly, which could be a plus. However, given the lukewarm response of my family in terms of how good they taste, and the saturated fat content, I can't offer an enthusiastic endorsement of the product. But if you like plantain chips in general, the Himalayan salt flavor is pleasing, and it offers a refreshingly salty snack that's actually pretty low in sodium. 3Totally a fanThick crunchy healthy choice with just the right amount of salt 5I do not really recommend theseIt must be because of the coconut oil, but there is a weird after taste to it it is not pleasant. 3Tasted like fresh plantains, satisfying thick crunch, though minimal salt taste to me.I try to keep a very healthy diet without any junk foods. Sometimes, though, you just feel like something with a little salt and crunch that is tasty and not so bad for you. The package arrived today and I was anxious to indulge, especially since the arrival coincided with a crunch craving moment. The first challenge was getting to the snack. I understand the need for being air tight, but unless you carry a scissor in your pocket at all times, be prepared to wrestle with this bag like that alligator wrestler act I saw as a child visiting the everglades. I at last was able to pry the bag open without flinging the contents all over the floor, so from the get go I felt a small victory. Like at least one other reviewer, though, I looked at the contents of the bag and wondered, is that really all there is? Hysterically, I noticed the writing on back said this was 1.5 servings! Exactly what I thought when I saw the contents. Whoa, I won't finish all that. I'll save a third of that for another day.The chips themselves are crinkle cut which is fun I suppose on some level, and the cut is slightly thicker than other chips I've eaten. The taste was, well, like banana. Another reviewer said it was way too salty, but my lazy taste buds, failed to detect any salt at all. I never add salt to any of my foods or cook with it, so I imagined I would be more sensitive to saltiness. Very little here, according to my buds. The crunch was satisfying. I like that they are organic, meaning in this case I suppose that the plantains were not bathed in insect killing poisons, which is a big plus. I also like that they're cooked in coconut oil which I believe is beneficial though it's a saturated oil. I grabbed the bag as I was leaving the house, but I finished the bag and wished I'd grabbed two bags since that amount is more realistically one serving.I need to do more crunch testing but so far I can say I like the taste and the thick crunch and would prefer a tad more salt. If my math is correct, you get a total of 2 pounds of snack for $50 or about $25 a pound. So as far as value, that can be determined by you. In all I like the chips and would rate them 3 1/2 stars. 3a bit too salty for meGood and I appreciate the fact they are organic, but they are a bit salty for me. 4Best chipsThey were a little on the harder side, maybe they were older idk. But, these chips are the tastiest chips ever! I get them from a health food store and they aren't as hard, like I was saying before. But, this was a great deal. I couldn't pass it up. 5Bad, bad, bad qualityToo salty, too hard, too bad.........wao!!! 1Tasty plantain chips at a high priceThese plantain chips from Barnana are tasty, and organic, at a high price. They're ridged, thick chips, with poor separation in the bag you sometimes get many fused together into a huge lump and good crunch, with very salty flavor. (VERY salty, and the salt isn't well-distributed betwen bites.) They don't really taste any better than, or different from, the standard brands like Soldanza or Goya, but they're fine. The price is very high relative to buying those, even when you order in this large bulk pack, but perhaps it's worth it if you're specifically looking for an organic product. I would note that contrary to odd overheated claims in many other reviews there is really nothing "healthy" about this product: it's an acceptable treat or occasional snack, but nothing that should make up a regular or large part of your diet. It's not a "healthier" potato-chip substitute: it's the same thing. One other small note is that the small bags are very annoying to open, and once torn they can't be re-closed and don't do a good job containing the mess. 3OkayNot bad but wouldn't buy again. 3
