Jade Leaf Matcha vs Kenko MatchaThe photos speak for itself. On the left is Kenko Matcha and on the right is Jade Leaf Matcha. Based on color, the winner goes to Kenko Matcha! However, in my opinion, both are excellent. There is a slight difference in texture- Kenko requires a bit more mixing because the powder is more compacted. I would recommend sifting the powder prior to adding liquid. Whereas, the Jade Leaf Matcha mixes easily without any clumps. Both taste the exact same if made into a latte. On its own, there is a difference but I'm no professional. I couldn't describe the difference even if I tried.... Lol! However, there is a slight difference in price between the two. Jade Leaf is slightly cheaper for the same amount and comes sealed in a foil bag within a nice reusable tin can. 5please dont give any more customers expired proudcts especially if youre charging 24 bucks for it dont feel like wasting my time i opened it before finding out ...refundable or not check your orders to make sure they arent expiredseriously. please dont give any more customers expired proudctsespecially if youre charging 24 bucks for itdont feel like wasting my time i opened it before finding outbatch #k170047 1Very unhappy as prior orders were great.I have bought this several times, but this last order tastes sour - something clearly has gone wrong. And, it appears that i cannot return it. Very unhappy as prior orders were great. 1Okay...I'm impressed.I don't think I've ever written a review on Amazon before, but I felt rather compelled to take the time to do so after having tried Jade Leaf's ceremonial-grade matcha. The short version of my review: it's awesome, go buy it, I highly doubt you'll regret the purchase. The long version of my review: see below (although it pretty much sums up to the same points addressed above).First, for context, a short blurb regarding my tea-drinking experience thus far:I enjoy tea. Specifically, I enjoy green tea, and have a preference for Japanese Sencha. However, I'm a graduate student who regularly lives off of oatmeal, cereal, and ramen on a daily basis and thus, an individual who is rather careful about spending money unnecessarily. So I restrict my throughout-the-day tea-drinking to Kirkland's Ito En green tea bags (which I do genuinely enjoy as well and think are great in terms of both price and quality), which I buy at my local Costco.I didn't know a great deal about matcha until I did some looking into it and read quite a few articles singing its praises as a health supplement. After that...well, I did more research to learn about the "gradations" of matcha (i.e. culinary vs. ceremonial grade, etc.), the locations matcha is generally produced/grown, standards of quality, and so on. Then, I conducted even MORE research with regards to issues that had been mentioned by others over the course of my fervent internet-trawling, concerns such as traces of lead being found in certain Chinese teas, safety concerns regarding Japanese teas after the Fukushima Daiichi disaster, etc.Ultimately, I found that Uji, Japan, the source of Jade Leaf's matcha, is farthest removed in location from the nuclear plant site as you can get; official reports have not found a single trace of radiation in the teas of this region. (Also, for reference, since I touched on it a little earlier, unlike certain Chinese teas, Japan's tea growers are really great about screening for heavy metals and other contaminants such as lead, etc. so we're all safe on that front.)So, with the full power of Google behind me and many hours of reading under my belt, I scoured Amazon and other commercial sites for the best matcha possible, while also weighing my desire for quality relative to the necessity of a reasonable price. And finally, I found...Jade Leaf! Actual organic, ceremonial-grade matcha from Japan, grown in the Uji district, again, one of the farthest locations from any possible radiation exposure (with lack/absence of the presence of such radiation confirmed by official reports I'd read through beforehand). I was pretty ecstatic about the find and hoped for the best when I placed my order. The matcha arrived 4-5 days within my order placement, in a cute little tin that had a pull-tab keeping the bagged matcha within the container tightly sealed to preserve its freshness. After I'd unscrewed the lid off the tin, peeled off the pull-tab, and then opened the bag containing the matcha, I was hit with a surprisingly sweet and subtly grassy/vegetal smell, and the sight of a fairly vividly green matcha. After I'd prepared it (again, using the power of Google and this time, Youtube, to guide me through the process!), I was most definitely impressed. It tasted...GOOD. Well, for tea, anyway. I mean, come on, don't expect it to taste like chocolate cake or something (seriously, I made it for a friend and he was expecting one of those commercialized Starbucks pseudo-green tea concoctions, which had me looking at him like he was crazy). I admittedly don't have experience with other matcha to compare it to in terms of taste; however, everything I've looked into thus far regarding quality, plus my personal palate itself, staunchly give this matcha an A+. I'm very, very happy I made the decision to order it. Currently, I'm carefully coveting and jealously guarding my remaining supply until it runs out. At which point, I've already made the executive decision to order more, so I can continue pairing my daily cup of matcha with one of my three meals of oatmeal, cereal, and/or ramen :DIn closing, I suppose this was my excessively long-winded endorsement of this product. I apologize for the monologue, but since it's my first review on Amazon, I figured I might as well go all out. Again, to sum up, I would give this a try and see if it's for you. Cheers! 5Great matcha at a reasonable priceThis is one of three matcha teas I have had, and is the best of them so far. One other was also labeled as ceremonial grade, but had somewhat of the bitter taste many associate with culinary grade. Jade Leaf has little to no bitterness in comparison. It is a complex green tea with umami, and vegetal flavor and a hint of sweetness. The aroma of the tea is very potent as well, sweet and distinct. I have prepared it both hot, whisking it in the traditional preparation method (it makes a world of difference using a bamboo chasen, which mixes it thoroughly with the water, as opposed to using a fork or metal whisk), and cold, mixing it in a shaker bottle with cold water. When prepared hot the umami and vegetal flavors are forward, while the cold preparation has a sweeter, smooth flavor forward. This is a tea I will keep stocked and drink daily. The price for the quality of matcha is incomparable. I was looking at prices up to twice this for some similar quality matchas at the online tea merchants I frequent. 5Not GreatI found this Matcha to be quite gritty and bitter compared to others I have tried. The colour is rather muddy and very little froth, this is a low quality tea. I drink a glass every day for health reasons and don t seem to get the mellow feeling I did with other high quality teas. Don t think I will purchase this one again, sorry I spent over $50 on a large bag, I can't drink it, it's horrid. 1Misleading description/ photosItem did not come as described I ordered the jade leaf matcha green tea ceremonial grade and was expecting the container. All I ended up getting was a non resealable bag. I included a picture of what you should expect because the picture and label of 30g tin is very misleading. I had ordered the culinary grade matcha from this company before and it came better packed than this. 1disappointmentI'm currently in a matcha kick. My close friend just open a matcha place and it's a bit far for me to go get my daily dose of matcha goodness. I've been ordering different ceremonial grade matcha on amazon. I might have to beg my friend to sell me some of her matcha powder. This is the 4th matcha brand I have tried. I ordered the kenko, moon, aiya matcha green tea beside this one. This Jade brand gave me the worst BITTER TASTE of all four, I can go as far to compare it to regular matcha grade. The best one was the aiya no bitter after taste and leaves a sweet butter taste instead. Only reason I'm not committing to the aiya one because they don't test / regulate the amount of lead in their product to meet California lead standard and I don't know if they source it from Uji area. All earth grown plants has small amount of lead, (coffee, sweet potatoe, etc.. ) This one was the worst of all 4 brands. I had high hopes since it's from uji farmers from japan I had to try it to see which brand I would commit on a daily drinking especially it's alot of $$$ for matcha I want my money's worth. 1Poor QualityI have tried this brand of matcha in the past and loved it. It had a bright green color, earthy aroma and sweet taste. This past order experience has been less than satisfactory. Upon opening my new tin of matcha I noticed the color was a dark green almost brown color. That alone should have told me not to try it but I did anyways. This matcha tasted stale and was horrible. I m really disappointed because matcha is expensive and this item is non returnable. I guess I will look for a different brand to try in the future. 1Jade Leaf high grade ceremonial tea sourced from organic Japanese family farmI purchased both the Jade Leaf and Kenko Matcha Green Tea Powder. Both are ceremonial grade Matcha about as pure as you can get. Both are sourced from small family farms in Japan and are tested repeatedly for radiation. Jade Leaf is slightly less expensive at $23.95 for 30G. Kenko is slightly more expensive at $27.99 for 30G. Kenko has a slightly sweeter flavor and the tea powder is a brighter green. Jade Leaf is not as sweet and a tad darker in color. I like them both equally and alternate between teas. I have become an avid Matcha tea drinker after being a long term espresso coffee drinker. The clean refreshing buzz keeps me alert for hours without the jitters. Also L-Theanine an amino acid found primarily in teas promotes relaxation, reduces stress, while at the same time boosts concentration and alertness. I can code for hours on this tea. Traditional ceremonial teas are packed in light tin containers that seal air tight. Keep them in the refrigerator to keep it fresh and cold.Jade Leaf arrived with a sealed bag of powder tea inside the tin. You simply cut the bag open then pour tea inside the tin. I think they took extra precaution for freshness by double packing. Kenko arrived with the tea loose inside the tin. It was not double packed. It didn t affect the taste or freshness at all. Jade Leaf sent me follow up emails asking if everything arrived ok and if I was enjoying the tea. They also sent me coupons for future purchases. Nice touch. I like it when suppliers take the time to do this. Kenko sent me an email asking if all was good but they did not offer any future purchase coupons. All in all I like them both. If I had to buy just one next time I might go with Kenko because I prefer the slightly sweeter taste. I would recommend buying both as I did and do your own taste test comparison. These are two very good Matcha teas on the market and I wouldn t bother with any other brands. Both of these teas are created in the highest strictest manner with emphasis on quality and taste. They also buy from small family farms which I like. I was not paid for this endorsement nor did I receive any incentives from suppliers for writing this review. 5
