Customer Reviews

Recently started for slightly elevated triglycerides, no side effectsSelected this product for brand familiarity as Niacin was recently recommended for elevated lab values. Didn't anticipate side effects however have always taken it at night so that if there were any I might sleep through them. I get no flushing or itching or anything that I am aware of. I experience no upset stomach or diarrhea related to taking supplements for health. Will remain brand loyal and update this review after my labs are redrawn in the new year although I have changed my diet to lower the triglycerides as well so that will also have an impact. To your health! 5Flush....what flush? So far so good! My lipid panel on my last physical showed slight elevations so the Dr told me that add in a little Niacin. I got these and took one pill with dinner. I dont have long term results yet but will post up again when I have my next physical. The FLUSH, which is likely why you are reading the reviews....The FLUSH is minimal! I took 1 pill 500mg with dinner...and hour later, I BARELY feel anything and my skin isnt red at all. No burn and no redness. I can feel I took something but its nothing drastic at all. I would say no flush effect as some have reported. Take with food and you will likely feel little to no flush as I am experiencing 5Prepare to FlushI usually use Doctor's Best 500 mg Timed Release Niacin, but it was out of stock for my next Subscribe and Save shipment, so I ordered Now's Niacin Sustained Release. I took one with my dinner and a couple hours later the flushing was absolutely horrible. I sometimes get flushing with the Doctor's Best, but it is rare and much less severe when it does happen. Now's Niacin caused such severe flushing that I threw out the remaining 249 tablets. Since I am on a prescribed dosage of 1500mg daily, Now's Niacin would be completely unacceptable. I would stay away from this brand unless flushing doesn't bother you. 1It's Not Non flushI've been taking niacin for many years. This is the only labeled nonflush or sustained release that has caused me to flush. It's surely not nonflushing! It caused me to flush/tingle big time. I'm pitching 245 tablets in the trash. 1Great product, now sure why so many bad reviewsThis has some bad reviews but I have used this product with success for years. In the beginning I had some flushing, which was basically negligible. My doctor recommended niacin to improve my cholesterol profile and is has worked for me. 5Not really sustained reliefI bought this as an alternative to the Rugby brand I've been using for years because it was quite a bit cheaper. What a mistake! Product said time release, but I had that very uncomfortable niacin "flush" each time I took it. Unacceptable. Went back to Rugby brand at once. 1Don't believe the bum rapsI have been taking this product (niacin 500mg sustained release tablets, Now brand) for over 20 years. I started it when my cholesterol, triglycerides and HDL became abnormal, increasing my risk for coronary and other artery disease. I had been told about niacin by another physician (I am a physician) a few years earlier because that's what he was doing and it was working for him. He is still alive at about the age of 90. I am now 63. The pharmacology texts describe this vitamin's beneficial effects on lipid profiles and reducing the development of atherosclerosis, and I initially learned about it in medical school. Please read this whole review to see how to minimize the flushing that nearly everyone gets from niacin.I had learned that I would need to start with a low dose and gradually increase it to 2 to 3 gms per day. Even with that, there were some episodes of mild flushing when I started and with each increase of dosage, which is not surprising. The flushing wasn't noticeable by others, just me. I actually found it kind of interesting and stimulating. So, if you want to want to normalize your lipid profile at a low cost and avoid the potential side effects of the much more expensive presciption medications, please follow these directions.1. Start at 250 or 500 mg per day. You may take 5gr (325mg) of aspirin 30 minutes before your niacin dose to reduce flushing.2. Once you are no longer experiencing flushing at your current dose, usually after a few days to a week or two, increase your dose by 250 or 500 mg, and stay at that level until you are no longer experiencing flushing, eventually reaching 2000mg (four tablet of 500mg)per day.3. Have your lipid profile checked again after you have been on 2000 per day for a few weeks, and if it is not yet normal, continue the above procedure to increase to 3000mg (six tablets of 500mg) per day. Check your lipid profile again after a few weeks at that dose. It should now be normal or close to normal. If it is not, you are not going to respond to niacin, and should try the prescription meds.My results (granted, this is anecdotal, but not atypical):My lipid profile normalized at 2000mg per day, and has stayed that way ever since, with greatly reduced total and LDL cholesterol, greatly reduced triglycerides, and significantly increased HDL. My personal physician has been amazed, considering that my levels were so abnormal before I started, the fact that my father had severe lipid abnormalities and died at age 66 of coronary disease, and that I have a great liking for all the wrong foods. To cap this off, I underwent a pre-operative cardiac catheterization a few years ago, and my coronary arteries were COMPLETELY CLEAR, without any signs of atherosclerosis. I have no reason to doubt that they have remained that way, and my peripheral pulses are full and bounding, like they were when I was in my 20s.On another note, I believe that niacin has actually been shown to reduce atherosclerotic plaques in those persons who have already developed them. So, please do your own research from reliable medical and pharmacological texts and articles, don't believe the bum raps from people who didn't use the above procedure, and give it a try. It just may extend your life.By the way, don't use the "flush-free" capsules, because they don't seem to improve the lipid profile the way that the sustained release tablets do. 5Oh, that Niacin Flush...I'd been using a no-flush 500mg niacin supplement, and experienced...no flush. I ordered this brand when my original purchase wasn't available. The difference between that no-flush brand and this brand is...pronounced. Have you ever taken a vitamin supplement and wondered if it was really doing anything? The first niacin supplement, I did. From the very first dose of the NOW brand, I had no doubt it was taking a habanero flame-thrower to my bloodstream. If you've never experienced the niacin flush, the first experience can be disconcerting, especially if you don't know what it is. For 45 minutes or so I pinked up like I'd napped too long in a tanning bed, and I feared the worst. Once I started Googling and realized this was an expected side-effect, my anxiety dipped and I rode the flush with curiosity. The onset was a couple hours after I'd taken it. The first dose was the most extreme; within a few days the impact was moderate to minimal.Once I knew what to expect, I actually found the flush energizing. The first dose of the day tends to provide the biggest flush; I take 2-4 doses a day, and by day's end there's almost no flushing. However, if you experience a discomforting level of heat, I'd recommend dropping to a smaller dose until your system is ready for 500mg, let alone several thousand (for cholesterol control).A couple of suggestions to minimize the flush: take at the end of a meal. Drink plenty of water - at least 16 ounces. 4best niacin on the marketI have used other niacin and I did not get the niacin flush, as a result I always questioning if it was working. The Now Niacin is time released and I take it at night so most of the time I do not notice it, but if I take too much I do get the flush. I like that flush from time to time just so I know it is really Niacin not some pill maker that says it is. I also believe in order for the niacin to do what it is suppose to you need the flush. It is a little bit like taking the smell out of garlic, how do you know what they took out isn't what made it work in the first place. 5No more need for medicationI ordered this to help with my cholesterol and it does. I no longer need to take medications for this problem. 5
