Customer Reviews

I loved this thingHere's the thing . . . I loved this thing. It's the third one I've tried, after a cheapo model that wasn't powerful enough, and a different brand that was flimsy and fussy. This one was kind of expensive for my budget, but it sounded perfect. And it was. And then one day it just up and died, after two months of use. The touch screen totally vanished and it doesn't have a workaround. Hilariously, the alarm still sounded for a few mornings (no light, just sound). With no touch screen I couldn't turn it off--and the handy emergency battery meant unplugging it didn't help. I ended up putting it out on the porch until it shut off.Anyway, I'm going to try and figure out how to return it and hopefully get a replacement or repair (sadly, it died after the return window for Amazon, though not by that much). If that works out, I'll come back and amend this review. Until then, one star because it broke my heart (and my amazing streak of being on time for work).1Disappointing for the priceI expected this top-of-the-range model to equal the Philips HF3520/60 Wake-up Light Colored Sunrise Simulation, White, or even surpass it, but was very disappointed. While the controls were touch based and much easier to navigate than the HF3520, the color was lacking. It spent most time in the bright white/yellow range and less in the orange and far less in the red compared to the HF3520. The color faded to a 'smog' orange and rapidly through a smoky red turned grey-red and out. This was on the sunset simulation. Reverse it for the sunrise. The 'doughnut' design meant a lot of light was scattered or missing, resulting in an overall darker brightness when compared to the HF3520. I brought that model for $104 here on Amazon and now it is selling for $235 as of 12/07/2018, so I chose to spend the same on a newer model. I am returning it and found another HF3520 elsewhere online as it is very hard to get. Pros: The modern design and touch interface. It makes for a great nightlight or gentle reading lamp. Cons: The color simulations dissapointed me very much for the price point. Stick with the HF3520 for truer simulations.2Required app *WILL NOT WORK* without location access (and other fun setup issues).Pros: Nice ID; clean, easy to use UI. Nice selection of alarm sounds. Light works well.Cons: Account registration in app is broken in multiple ways; required. App requires location access "to connect to WiFi"; will not allow you to do anything without it. Network communication with app is janky at best, and appears to be partially broken. App must be on same WiFi network as device, despite relying on Philips's servers for most functionality.I'm really torn about this product. There's honestly a ton to like about it. The alarm sounds are some of the best I've seen in a bedside clock. The light provides a wonderfully smooth glow and transition from dark to light and back. Even the screen and UI are really nicely integrated into the product. (A dot-matrix display projected onto the back of a curved diffuser ring with a capacitive touchscreen interface is seriously just cool, and it blends *perfectly* with the rest of the light, whether on or off.) Yet, I can't possibly leave this product a positive review due to the connected features. The problems started shortly after registering, and after resolving some network troubles. (More on that below.) Right after I got everything working for the first time, I closed the app, re-opened it, and was kicked back to a login screen, where I re-entered the email address and password I had just registered only to be told they were incorrect. I reset the password, confirmed I could login on my computer, but still couldn't login to the app.At this point, I figured I'd try registering a new account. No matter what email address I entered, I received an error *on the email address field* stating that the phone number (yes, phone number) was already in use. No, I never entered a phone number, and I know the app does not have access to my number without asking me. The next morning I tried again and was able to register under yet another email address, but if I tried to use any address I had entered the previous night, I received the same error about my phone number being in use. I did try the reset password option on these addresses, which confirmed none had accounts associated with them. It's worth mentioning here that the fact the SleepMapper reset password button tells you whether or not there's an account associated with the email address reflects *extremely* poorly on Philips's account security. It should not be possible for anyone to determine whether an account is registered under a given email address without either owning that address (thus receiving the reset email) or knowing the account password (thus logging in).I've contacted Philips support in the hopes that they clear out these zombie accounts, but rather than wait and pray, I also registered under yet another email address. I'm up to 6 separate email addresses required just to setup an account successfully, as the first five I tried are now associated with either an account on which I can login on Philips's website but not the app or some kind of zombie account which blocks registration but also doesn't exist as far as the password reset and login forms are concerned. Wonderful! Now that I finally registered a working account and reset and re-registered the light itself, I discovered yet another catch: The app simply *WILL NOT WORK* if you don't provide it with location access (which it claims is used "to connect the device to your Wifi and not to track your geographic location") and instead will dump you on a page with instructions to enable access. I would *really* love to know what the app developers were thinking here, as there's absolutely no reason GPS should have anything to do with a Wifi connection. The app also won't connect if it isn't on the same Wifi network as the device, so why not use a normal network discovery protocol like everyone else? (Note below that the app *does* do this. No idea what the GPS is for.)As for the networking itself, I'd really prefer not to keep this device on the same WiFi network as my phone and other trusted devices. Given that an account is required just to use the app and permission to send data to Philips is required for most app functionality, there's very little reason the app and light actually need to be on the same network. They could just as easily communicate through an online service (as many IoT devices do). At the very least, Philips could have used mDNS for service discovery rather than the somewhat less common SSDP (for which forwarding software doesn't exist that I'm aware of) combined with some sort of proprietary HTTP over UDP broadcast protocol. (Hey, if you send each PUT request 3 times in a row, it's *got* to get through, right???) Oh, and if you try to use a /23 (or, presumably, anything other than a /24) subnet, the app will hang forever on the first connection attempt. The end result is simply frustrating. The industrial design here is great, and the software on the clock itself seems to be solid. The app does allow for impressively granular control over data sharing, though unfortunately even the most basic option required for much of the app's functionality does allow Philips to use the data for product enhancements. (i.e. They're using your sleep data for product research.) But, unfortunately, any good is entirely overshadowed by the simultaneously horrendous and mystifying app design issues above.2The app doesn't work and it's UI is atrociousThe device arrived today and there's a 90% chance I'm sending it back tomorrow. The app set-up is not intuitive, it is not easy, and it has failure points where you can't navigate to a resolution. I read other reviews that said the set-up was problematic and I doubted I would have problems. I should have heeded those reviews. At this point, I'm annoyed that I bought a device for its connectivity and it won't connect.1Not really separate weekend / weekday settingsI stepped up to the higher-priced version because of two alarm settings one for weekday and one for weekend. This is deceiving because there isn t really a way to set by day of the week. It requires remembering to change the alarm. Disappointing. I will return and buy a less expensive model.3Don't ever upgrade your phone or, in my case, replace a broken one.Works fine until you get a different phone, which in my case was soon after purchase, and there is literally no way to get the light/clock to connect to anything but the first device it was ever connected to.I know how to read directions and resetting the device does not work (which btw requires a paperclip that is, hellooo, very quickly becoming if not effectively already obsolete in the household environment people, seriously?!). Redownloading the app (which was newly installed anyway but what the hell lets try it) does not work....FINALLY calling phillips during business hours and waiting on hold for a REAL good long time to talk about a warranty claim, however, does result in them saying they will send you a new one with surprisingly little info beyond I have a new phone . I assume because they know this is a serious problem BUT you now have to wait 47 days for your new alarm clock.....Truth....47 days.At first it was 3-5 business days then an email that it was delayed another 7 days, then another email 1 day before it was to arrive saying it will be 33 moooore days. Anyone else lil confused bout this? Meeee too.Back on the phone for me, cuz thats how everyone wants to spend their workdays.....Me: What do I need to do to get refunded? Them: that will require you to go online to blahblah website, file a claim for a refund with product details, proof of purchase etc. and it will take at least 6-8 weeks for anything to go through if not longer (Side bit of mental math, 6-8 weeks is 42+ days...interesting correlation )Me: Waaaaaait, so I called you folks weeks ago and walked through all this in painstaking detail and sent proof of purchase at which point you said a replacement unit was on the way and will be here in 3-5 business days. SO! Now that that is proving to be grossly unfounded Id like to change my answer Bob and I choose refund. I can buy it from your website today silly, aaaand from amazon aaaand from walmart aaand... Them: there is nothing we can do, you have to go to blahah website and fill out all the required information and wait for that claim to process Me: umm, so fill in all the info that you, phillips representative, are currently looking at? Them: yesMe: uhhh whuuuuuuuuut.........If only I could crowd source a response to this cuz I got nothin....truly at a loss.Dear PHILLIPS, stating some obvious here but IoT is clearly not your thing. Also your customer service is terrible. So, so bad.EPIC FAIl PHILLIPS1Fantastic Alarm ClockThe setup on the unit is pretty easy overall, but sometimes you can get lost in the setting you're in; but over time I'm sure I'll understand the product completely and navigate through it like a pro.The Somneo has two different alarm settings it can save, useful for the alarm I set on work days and the alarm I set for days off. You can use either the built-in sounds (which are nice), the radio, or no sound at all and just use the light. My first morning using the Somneo, I woke up about 5 minutes before it reached it's full brightness and started playing the alarm sound. When the alarm turns on, you can press the snooze button on top to turn the sound off temporarily, but the light will stay on at full brightness. In order to turn both the light and alarm sound off, you just press the screen.I particularly like that if you wake up during the middle of the night and need to get up for a few minutes, you can tap the snooze button on the top of the unit to enable a faint, constant orange glow (4th picture). You then tap the snooze button again to turn it off or you can leave it on for a night light. There is also a "wind down" feature that will represent the sun setting and can play audio again while the program is being used. There's also breathing exercises where you time your breaths with the audio being played, or with the light on the unit. The battery backup feature is also nice. In the case of a power outage, your settings and time won't get erased; however all the fancy functions of the unit are disabled. If running off of backup power, only the time is displayed in the unit, and your alarm will be a beeping noise, no nature sounds or radio, and no light... still better than resetting everything though when the power comes back on.In the end, it's a great alarm clock that's very modern looking and sophisticated, while being smaller than I originally thought. Is it too expensive though?.. yeah, it is. I purchased this unit specifically cause of the look, reviews compared to other like models, and the fact that it's a Philips and not some off brand. But it's still hard to swallow knowing I spent this amount of money on an alarm clock. BUT!.. if price isn't an issue and you're looking for a great alarm clock from a trustable brand and aforementioned features, this is the clock for you. I have no complaints about this unit whatsoever.5DO NOT PURCHASE - clock is totally dead after 3 months. If i could give it zero stars i would. The clock was delivered on March 18, 2018 and as of four days ago, it won t even turn on. Blank. No light- no sounds- nothing, the clock is completely dead. I have tried other outlets and still nothing. $200 dollars totally wasted.1The correct frequencies of light to actually work: red-orange-yellow. great alarm sounds. effective. This light works as designed and wakes me up better than any other I ve tried. I was told by a sleep specialist many years ago that there's a certain frequency of light that stimulates the 'feel good' hormones in the morning--in the red/orange frequency this has those. I am usually awake at about the right time before the music goes off. The alarm nature sounds and music are good quality and relaxing (not the scratchy looping sounds of other alarms.) I like all the tracks. There are 2 alarms, each with own settings. There is a battery alarm backup for power loss. There is a go to sleep/light dim timer, plus a breathe/relax setting which is nice. What I don t like:No quick on/off button for the alarms, unless at alarm time. (just need to do it through menu). Given how well the rest of this works that is not a dealbreaker for me. Please add it to the next version. The back top to turn the nightlight on/off may take a couple tries to get the right location. No, you can t use your mp3 as an alarm. All in all this is a very effective wakeup light and I believe for me it was a very solid purchase. it feels quality and well-designed to me, not cheap. Most of all - it works. I wake up relaxed and not annoyed like with so many alarm clocks.5and am pleased to say that the "teething troubles" seem to be ...I've had the Philips Somneo for over one week now, and am pleased to say that the "teething troubles" seem to be behind us!My fairly old-fashioned travel alarm clock died some years ago, and I switched to using my smart phone alarm. The suddenness of its ring tones was getting to me, especially (but not only) in winter when our bedroom is still dark. So I bought this wake-up light. As other reviewers have noted, the menu is not the easiest to navigate and it took me a while to figure it out. After the first few mornings, I was starting to regret this not inexpensive purchase - the buttons were unresponsive half of the time, I ended up having to unplug the whole thing rather than being able to gently tap the snooze button, the radio came on instead of the chosen wake-up sound being turned off, there were sudden beeping noises... you get the picture.I persevered. When I wasn't able to figure out how to adjust the duration of the sunrise (the instruction booklet tells you that you can, but not how to) I discovered that Philips offer on-line support through a live "chat", and someone at the other end of the computer guided me through the steps. This was a turning point in the Somneo's and my relationship! I am reasonably familiar with the menu now. And for some reason the buttons have become responsive! Phew. The brightness of the display (of current time and time the alarm is set for) can be adjusted, and at its lowest setting it is still perfectly readable but doesn't even disturb my lightsource-sensitive husband. I find it easy to quickly change the time for the alarm for the next day, if needed. I like the (visual) warmth of the reading light at night, and have been enjoying waking up to the soft mooing of cows plus birdsong in a sunrise glow.It is worth noting that the snooze button silences the sound for several minutes, but the light stays on, which could be annoying if the people sharing a bedroom got up at different times.4
