Customer Reviews

Great value! This is a fantastic deal for psyllium husk. I eat a lot of red meat and other high-cholesterol foods, and I don't have a lot of other sources of fiber in my diet. But my cholesterol is really low (especially for a guy my age and my size). I take massive quantities of this stuff every day (about two heaping tablespoons) along with the same massive quantity of another fiber supplement (Garden of Life Super Seed). I mix them together with hot water, so it's kind of like eating plain oatmeal or malt-o-meal. (That probably sounds gross to you, but it's amazing for a guy who doesn't get to eat normal, tasty grains or cereals on a typical day. And it's better than drinking cold mush.) I like this power better than the coarser stuff. It mixes better and goes down easier. Five stars for the value to my wallet and my health! 5Natural Psyillium Husk PowerOn the advice of my physician, I've been using Metamucil 2-3 times daily for the last few years. When they ran out of my favorite flavor, I started looking for alternatives. (Bad news for Metamucil!) Turns out there are other natural psyllium husk fiber supplements out there, and most are less expensive than the Metamucil brand and they don't have all the additives; just pure psyllium powder and nothing else. Also, they have a higher dose of psyllium per serving (5 grams vs. 3.4 grams for Metamucil).I've tried both Yerba Prima brand, and this Source Naturals brand, and I cannot tell any difference. So I've been choosing the one with the best price. This 4-pack deal works out to a total of 272 5-gram doses for under $19, compared with Metamucil's 114 3.4-gram doses for approx. the same price (on sale).Since both the Source Naturals and the Yerba Prima products are just the psyllium, I don't drink it with plain water. I like to mix it into a 16-ounce glass, filled halfway with water and half with apple juice and a tiny squirt of "water flavor enhancer" like Mio. For my second or third dose of the day, I just fill it with 16oz of water and two squirts of Mio. (Stir it up well and drink it fast before it starts to gel. I actually put the fiber in the empty glass and pour a bit of hot water on it and stir that to make it smoother before I pour in the cold water/juice.) My Doctor tells me that drinking a lot of water like this is almost as much a part of the therapeutic benefit as the fiber itself. 5Morning saverI have suffered from IBS for over twenty years now. My morning used to consist of many trips to the bathroom and my stomach always felt in knots. I have been told I'm allergic to coffee, but I just can't give up my one cup in the am. I heard about Psyllium Husk Powder on The Doctors show. I ordered some in hopes it would help me. I have been taking it ...one tsp with water ....daily for two weeks. I knew it was working because now I only use the bathroom once in am and maybe once at night. I can't tell you how much it has improved the bathroom visits. No more twenty min trips...two minutes tops! I forgot to take it yesterday and today...I'm right back to several bathroom trips and my stomach hurts badly this am! I'm now a lifer using this stuff. I eat extremely healthy foods...lots of salad and fruit, so it has nothing to do with my diet. I highly recomend this product for anyone having tummy problems. I find it tasteless, although texture is not the easiest to drink. I just do it because it's so worth the torture. I may try mixing it into juice. I wish you good health! 5Great For Gluten Free BakingGreat product for grain free baking. Initially I was concerned about buying this, because if it didn't work. I was stuck with three pounds of it! Happily, it works very well. The price is excellent for three pounds, and I do a lot of baking, so I need a lot of psyllium husk powder. It is a very fine grind, so there was no grit. It mixes easily with the alternative flours that I use, and it helps produce a nice bready texture and mouth feel. It feels similar to a bread baked with traditional flours. I won't say it is exactly like, but it is close enough, and we have been more than satisfied with the results. If you want a fine grind, this one will do very well for you. Initially the darker color concerned me, because some people have stated that various powders can impart an off color. Once it was mixed in with the flours, I couldn't see it any more, and when I took the buns out of the oven, the color was the same as always. There was no noticeably different or odd color. I have heard of some powders turning baked goodspurple! I don't know which brand that was, but luckily it isn't this one. If you have extensive grain allergies as I have, or if you follow a low carb diet, psyllium husk powder is a must. It does a phenomenal job with breads and buns. The price is great too. Eighteen dollars and some cents will give you three pounds, so I find it very cost effective. Anyone interested in grain free recipes should check out Paleo and low carb sites. To some extent, you might find some recipes on gluten free sites, but I have better luck with low carb and Paleo sites. One thing I have noticed is that you have to leave the bread and buns in the oven for the time called for. If you don't, the buns will collapse as soon as they hit the air. If you leave them in long enough, you will have nice plump, bready buns and breads. As a bonus, it may help keep you more regular. There is no downside to this product for me. 5Great for baking!I love this product. I used to buy NOW brand Psyllium powder, but when it went up in price I tried this one. Talk about a blessing in disguise! I should preface this by saying I use Psyllium husk powder as the source of lift when making bread and rolls with almond flour. Source Naturals Psyllium husk powder is absolutely fanastic! So far I have made at least 5 batches of rolls with 3 bottles that I purchased in two separate orders from two different sellers. The rolls were great, they raised much higher then with the NOW brand powder! 5better than husks for blender bottles (IMO)I had the whole husk before this and it was very gritty/sandy in my blender-bottle-protein-water concoction. This powder is perfect. Now, I don't let the protein water sit around (start to finish only takes ~2 minutes) so I don't know how this powder would fair if you didn't drink it right away. For me, for this use, it is perfect. (And I don't know why some reviewers are comparing it's consistency to flour. Mine is not nearly so fine as that.) 5Source Naturals Psyllium Husk PowderThis is a great product. If you buy metamucil, you know how well psyllium husk powder works for moving food through your digestive tract. Take a look at the ingredients in Metamucil - lots of things you can't pronounce plus artificial sweetener and colors, etc. Plain psyllium Husk powder is cheap and Amazon packages it in packs of 4. I buy the 4-pack and give some to my daughter and mother-in-law.Because it is tasteless, you can mix this with just about anything. I like to mix it with either orange juice or with Bolthouse Farms drinks - like the Veggie. I have a glass with a snap-on lid so I just pour in my liquid of choice, add a couple teaspoons of this powder, snap on the lid, shake vigorously, and drink the stuff. I like to do it before bedtime and it does the job the next morning. Be sure to use enough liquid and drink it soon after mixing. If not enough liquid is used, it can turn into a gel pretty fast making it harder to drink. This product has been a lifesaver to me. 5Great value, but I'm going back to Metamucil...I bought this 4-pack months ago because Metamucil is rather pricey (and I don't like orange, so the Walmart brand is out of the question). This is pure, unadulterated husk powder, and it works just the same as commercial products, but I won't be buying it again. The main reason I am going to use Metamucil again is because Source Naturals is just too coarse for me. The 4-pack has lasted me a lot longer than it should have, and that's mostly because I dread taking it. Unlike Metamucil which goes down like fruit juice (as long as you don't let it sit too long!), with this stuff you KNOW what you are drinking, and the grainy feel makes drinking it unpleasant. The tastelessness is also a big deal for me. Thus I find myself mixing it with Crystal Light or some other flavored mix. Obviously, this somewhat negates the low price, but there is no way I can drink it straight. I sometimes gag even with flavoring, so there's just no way. What powder I have left will be mixed with the next container of Metamucil I buy.Still, 4 stars because it works, this is a GREAT price, and for those who can handle it, they will get an awesome deal. It's not for me, but that doesn't mean it's not for you. I still encourage anyone to at least try it, because for 19 bucks, you get a lot of powder. 4Daily habit for my heart health & smaller waist linePsyllium regulates your system if your digestion is too fast or too slow but more than this it is very good for your heart health! This has no odor or taste and all you do is whisk in a teaspoon into an 8-16 oz glass of water and drink it immediately (it will solidify in your body to help pull fat and toxins out). It's not as thick as cream but thicker than milk and isn't at all unpleasant. It will lower your bad cholesterol levels over time and contributes to good colon health. This is one of the cheapest all natural things you can do for your preventative health. Make this a daily routine; your heart and waist line will thank you. 5Effective at a reasonable priceSeveral years ago, I dropped 25% of my weight in 6 months. Alas, the exhilaration of feeling invigorated was tempered by a nasty case of constipation despite eating high fiber foods. When Acidophilus did not help enough, I added psyllium, both for bulk and cholesterol-sponging, first from Trader Joe's then Whole Foods where I found it much cheaper. Next Whole Foods started running prices up and down like a yo-yo, looking for what traffic would bear. This bear cannot bear being gouged, leading to the Amazon 4 pack of Source Naturals Psyllium Husk Powder. As a powder, unlike 1/4 inch lengths of weeds, Source Naturals Psyllium mixes more readily with liquids. I find pulpy juices, like apple or high-pulp orange, to be the best vehicle. Taken as a rounded teaspoon twice per day, each bottle should last a month, so this is a good subscription candidate (15% off, free shipping). It works well for the primary purpose; as for the cholesterol, I have never had a test, so one now would yield no basis for comparison. Suffice it to say that medical literature strongly supports the claim. Interestingly, on Proctor & Gamble's website, clear fibers are roundly bashed in favor of P&G's expensive Metamucil, yet there is no mention of plain psyllium, the only ingredient in Metamucil that does anything useful. 5
