Customer Reviews

My dad likes irI originally got this black licorice in a Netherlands snack crate I believe but I set it aside because I happen to hate black licorice. Instead I gave it to my dad who likes it, and he said it was the best he s ever had. So I went ahead and ordered him a box to enjoy. 5Rich, deep flavor, and not too sweet. Not very sweet, a little salty, smoky, and rich, these are my favorites. Fantastic with a cup of coffee. That said, they are VERY different from Twizzlers and other American-style licorice. The flavor is much stronger and, again, different, and they are hard-but-chewy rather than squishy-and-chewy. 5Funny taste and more like a hard candyMy father who is 95 years old has a lot of black licorice his entire life. He remembers the days of old when they made a little licorice coins. And he s usually never fussy! I sent this to him and I got a phone call after it arrived. He said We re sending it back to you we can t eat it. Your mother and I tried it and just felt it was inedible. Apparently, he said it takes a really long time to chew and has a funny taste. I guess I should ve listened to the reviews. 1Bitter taste, don't like itPros:Prompt shipping, packaged well.Cons: Don't like the taste. It has this tangy, bitter flavor, almost like raw coffee beans or something. I've never tasted anything like it. 2Dutch Girl Knows Her LicoriceVenco is one of the better brands of Dutch licorice (drop). And coin (munten) drop is one of my favorite types. This Dutch Girl knows her drop. Buy Venco. 5it's much better than what passes for licorice in the USI've ordered this several times, it's much better than what passes for licorice in the US! 5LOVE this Licorice!I love this stuff!!! I am addicted to say the least; being able to get my favorite licorice whenever I want it could be very dangerous and expensive! It's not sold anywhere in the state of Hawaii. When my stash from my last trip to the mainland ran out I was so relieved to find it here on amazon. The world is truly at your front door when, with the click of a keystroke you can order in all kinds of foreign made gourmet foods and candies. 5Great licorice but price just increased.I love black licorice and have purchased these bags twice. Went in to purchase again tonight but the price has gone up $3. :(I am so bummed. 5REAL licorice (& advice on choosing your best licorice option). Great intro to a Dutch fave food :-)Food is an excellent introduction to less familiar cultures, and licorice is probably the all-time favorite product for Dutch people to chew on during the course of the day. Venco is probably the best recognized "mainstream" licorice brand in the Netherlands & parts of Belgium. You can get it in all the major grocery stores... Mainstream, however, doesn't mean that Venco compromises on quality (consumption of licorice is a staple in the Netherlands, people are very particular about licorice flavor & there are tons of competing brands, including those manufactured by the grocery stores).NOTE: IF you are looking for an alternative to Twizzler's "licorice" this probably will not work for you because it's quite a bit stronger in flavor. But, of all the Dutch types of licorice, the sweet coin shaped licorice and honey flavored licorice are by far the smoothest & easiest to enjoy (for foreign tongues). The closest thing I can compare it to in the US is the classic Good & Plenty, but it far surpasses Good & Plenty in flavor, consistency, and quality of ingredients.DUTCH LICORICE OPTIONS:* If you prefer something less sweet than coin licorice you can get the Cat licorice (though many Dutch people find cat licorice somewhat waxy & flavorless).* For a gentle introduction to more salty licorice, try the Boerderij Drop.* If you feel adventurous and want something saltier, try the "double salty" Though it should be noted that this is exceptionally salty for most pallets.HEALTH NOTE: There is a common misconception that the salt/sodium levels in licorice are responsible for increasing blood pressure. In actuality, it is the licorice itself that affects blood pressure (Google this to find out more). In practical terms, this means that if you have borderline high blood pressure you are better off avoiding straight licorice (e.g., dried licorice sticks, licorice supplements). Mainstream brands of Dutch licorice candy don't seem to have enough actual licorice in them to seriously impact blood pressure (or, the tiny country of the Netherlands would have died out long ago!). :-) Nonetheless, borderline blood pressure problems are nothing to play around with, and I would, therefore, recommend research & consultation with your doctor).PRICE: The price is fair for an imported product, particularly when you purchase the pack of 4 (or buy a 1 kg pack). So, if you're looking for something unusual (assuming you're not Dutch) but mild on a relative scale I would definitely recommend the coin or honey flavored licorice from Venco. Here comes the disclaimer: I am not a medical professional, just somebody who has grown up loving licorice and who has been somewhat confused by the sometimes visceral reactions of Americans to the smell and flavor of Dutch licorice. LOL. :-) 5Hate it!Can't believe this passes as licorice. It tastes like disgusting chemical mess. Checked all packages, all terrible. Don't buy this unless you know from experience that you like to eat crap. It's no wonder some kids hate licorice if this is their introduction. 1
